This article explains how to respond to facility-level data requests if your organisation does not operate manufacturing facilities, or uses a mix of owned and third-party sites.
Supplier requests should normally be completed at facility level. This provides the most accurate and consistent data.
However, some organisations, such as office-based service providers or intermediaries, may not operate their own manufacturing facilities. This article explains how to handle these exception cases.
Standard approach (Owned manufacturing facilities)
In most cases, you should respond to facility-level requests by assigning and reporting against your owned or operated manufacturing facilities.
This is the default and preferred approach.
If you do not operate manufacturing facilities
If your organisation does not operate manufacturing sites, you can create a single facility to represent your core business operations.
-
Step 1: Create one “office” facility
Create one facility for your main office or core operations, such as your head office.
-
Step 2: Report Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions
Enter your office energy data, or provide your calculated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
-
Step 3: Report Scope 3 emissions
How you report Scope 3 depends on your business type.
Office-based service providers should select the most appropriate service type and report the revenue associated with each customer.
Intermediaries should select the closest matching activity based on the products they sell. Report the volume or value of goods sold per customer only for products manufactured at sites you do not own or operate. This helps estimate emissions from externally manufactured products correctly and avoids double counting products already reported under owned facilities.
If you have mixed operations
If your organisation has both owned facilities and outsourced or third-party manufacturing:
Report against any owned or operated facilities as normal.
For activities that are not linked to owned sites, create a single “office” facility and follow the steps above for suppliers without manufacturing facilities.
This ensures your direct operational emissions are reported accurately at facility level, while outsourced activities are still captured.
If you do not operate manufacturing facilities
If your organisation is fully remote and does not routinely use any business premises, you can enter zero for the pre-calculated Scope 1 & 2 emissions and select one of the service types for Scope 3.
- Assign and report against any owned or operated facilities as normal
- Select pre-calculated emission data metric and enter zero for scope 1 and scope 2 data.
- You can use the React button to skip data metrics that are not relevant to your business.
