Emissions from transport and mobile equipment

  • Updated

This article details how to report emissions from energy consumption by vehicles or equipment owned or leased by your company. When vehicle emissions data are not available in fleet management systems, this article provides guidance on how to calculate them

What's included in this section?

Report emissions from vehicles and equipment that your company owns or leases, such as:

  • Forklift trucks

  • Shunt trucks

  • Construction equipment

  • Other non-road mobile equipment

  • Freight trains

  • Commercial aircraft

  • Boats and marine vessels

  •  If you use diesel for mobile plants and you use the GHG tool, don't add diesel to the energy fields in the platform.

🚨Don’t include vehicle or equipment fuel here if it’s already counted in your energy data — otherwise you’ll double count it.

What is out of scope (considered Scope 3)

The following are not included in transport and mobile equipment emissions and should not be reported here:

  • Employee commuting

  • Business travel

  • Upstream and downstream transportation by third parties

  • Emissions from transporting raw materials or distributing products

These are classified as Scope 3 emissions under the GHG Protocol Organization Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard. To see more about scope 3 see our guide here (LINK)

How to calculate emissions

To calculate your CO2e emissions, you can use the GHG Protocol calculation tool which can be found here. Additional guidance can be found in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory Guidance Direct Emissions from Mobile Combustion Sources.

Once you have downloaded the GHG Protocol’s Excel tool:

  • Go to the tab Calculator.
  • Work your way from left to right, filling out each column as you go.

Select from the drop-down list

Note that the tool uses default emission factors, which vary by country. Currently, separate sets of emission factors are available for the UK and US. For other countries, if more specific emission factors are not available, companies should select the ‘Other’ category. This category uses either global default values or UK-specific values, which means it will lead to less accurate calculations. On the settings tab, users can supply custom emission factors or adjust the default global warming potentials.

💡Once you have provided all the information on this tab, the Total (metric tonnes CO2e) can be seen in the Summary tab.  (LINK)
