This article explains how to report your production output figure and allocate output to customers. It covers unit selection, how the data is used to normalize other metrics, how percentage allocations work, and what information is shared or kept confidential.
The Production output figure
Your production output figure is the quantity of product that is manufactured on-site every year. This is irrespective of the customer it is supplied to and can be reported in mass, volume, sales value, number of units, and more.
⚙️To change the unit type of the production output figure , select the drop down menu to the right of Input field.
✚For a facility, this will typically be your total final product (for all customers added together).
📊It is used by some reports to normalize other data, for example, to calculate 'water use per unit/tonne of output'.
🔒The values shared will only be visible within your organization.
% Allocation to customers
You are also required to provide an allocation to indicate the proportion of your output that is sold to each customer.
This is known as a percentage allocation.
🔒It is not visible to your customers and is only used to allocate emissions and resource use from your operations to your customers as their upstream emissions and impact.
FAQs
Do I need to make the % allocation add up to 100%?
No, the total % allocation does not need to add up to 100%. The percentage allocation you enter should reflect the portion of your facility's total output that is attributed to each customer currently on the platform. Since not all your customers may be on the platform, it's normal for the total to be less than 100%.
How does the % allocation affect how my data is shared?
When entering data, you provide your facility's total output and the % allocation for each customer. These figures are never shared with your customers. Instead, this information helps us accurately assign emissions to each buyer based on their allocation. This ensures that your customers can view their attributed emissions as part of their Scope 3 reporting without accessing your facility's total production output.
Is a product’s packaging included in total weight?
Yes, in most cases, packaging should be included in the total weight as it is part of the product produced. If you feel that your packaging makes up a significant proportion of the weight and might make the total output unrepresentative, please feel free to reach out for further guidance.
What should I put for my total output if I don’t supply physical products?
As a service provider, you can use your service fee or contract value as your total output. We will only use this data to calculate your emission intensity per product unit, and we won't report this data to your customers.
What should I put for my total output when what I sell to my customer comprises both products I manufacture on site as well as products I purchase from a third party?
Only include products manufactured at your facility, i.e. exclude products that you purchase and sell on without any manufacturing activity.
Should I include co-products or by-products in my total output?
If the by-product or co-product is sold (i.e. is a source of revenue), it should be included as part of your production data.
What should I do when one of my company’s facilities (“Facility A”) sells some of its production output directly to a customer and ships some to a second facility (“Facility B”) for further processing, before it is sold to the same customer?
Facility A should report only the portion sold directly to the buyer, excluding amounts sent to the second facility. From this perspective, Facility B acts as a buyer for Facility A. Facility B should likewise report only the percentage of output sold directly to the buyer.
